Flightfall (Frank Pavlicek Book 5)Loved this book. I learned so much about peregrine falcons and how one can fall in love with them. Frank Pavlicek, private investigator and his daughter, Nicole, drive to the aid of a friend Jake Toronto who has found his best falcon dead. Jake was emotionally attached as we would be if Toronto were our best friend. Jack is devastated and wants the person caught who shot him. Rich people are intimately involved and the three investigators are not deterred from their quest. Enjoyable.

I like the author so I am biased. Also the predator bird angle is attractive to me. I would give the story five stars except I guessed the culprit very early in the novel. Generally the novel lacks depth, almost a short story stretched into a novel. But I like the characters in this author's novels.
I guess it is ok. Nothing to write home about. I really like this series but was disappointed in this one. It was very short and there just really was not much to it. There was a mystery over who shot one of Toronto"s birds. Caused Frank to miss part of his planned vacation. Just really did not develop into anything much. I like the characters of Frank, Nicole and Toronto and look forward to getting back to one of Straka's regular Pavlicek mysteries.
I am a big fan of Andy Straka and was pleased to find another Pavlicek story had come out, apparently it was published before the stand-alone, Blue Halleluhah, which was excellent.
This was originally a short story which was expanded to novella length. It took me about two hours to read.
This one centers almost exclusively around Jake Toronto and Frank, with Nicole, Frank's daughter, now working full time for Frank, having more of an active role in her father's business.
I'm a little confused, though, I must have missed Frank marrying Marcia somehow, but that isn't germaine to this story.
Jake is classic Jake in this quick story, stoic and taciturn. Frank is called away from a rare vacation to help him figure out who killed Jake's perergine, Jazzman and they end up in the mountains of Virgina on a quest to find the killer.
The writing is as always, good. It's hard to develop a story in 18,000 words, but Mr. Straka managed to do well with it. I am not a fan of novellas in general, but I enjoyed the story and certainly got my money's worth.
If you have not read the Pavlicek series yet, I would strongly recommend you start with the first book, A Witness Above, and then go in order (A Killing Sky, Cold Quarry, Kitty Hitter) before you read this little gem or you will be missing out on the flow of the series and the character development.
I've really liked the books in this series in the past. I liked the characters and the birds of prey story which is very unique. This book however was so light (and short) in all aspects I really have to wonder why the author released this one. If it is the first book a new reader picks up they are not likely to go back and read the others. A few issues I had
1) The story was just not interesting. I kept waiting for something bigger to develop, that the initial entry point was just the so-called tip of the iceburg. It wasn't.
2) There were no real twists or surprises anywhere. SPOILER ALERT - There is nothing jaw dropping anymore about a same sex affair, and in this case it seemed a very lame attempt to add some intrigue.
3) The two main characters are former NYPD cops turned private investigators. You expect they will encounter and survive, sometimes barely, danger through out a book like this. There was none of that. A totally unsuspenseful car change where they pursued just has to pull off onto a shoulder so the pursuer can go by?? Really??
I was very impressed with the author when he came to speak at a library group I belong to, so I'm really disappointed that he'd put out such a weak effort as this one. The other books in the series, especially the first 3, are what is keeping me from giving this one just 1 star.

Frank is about to join his wife for a seaside vacation when he receives a plea for help from his long-time friend and former police partner Jake Toronto whose prize falcon has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Frank changes plans and, along with his daughter and co-investigator Nicole, travels to Jake's home to offer help in solving the mystery. Jake's thought is that the bird was shot while in flight - an act requiring an expert marksman. His suspicions of perpetrator are narrowed to people with whom he has had recent contact - a wealthy physician, his wife, a very attractive woman chef, and a local construction worker. From a tip, cover for an illicit operation may have been the motive.
At the conclusion of this novella, he includes an introduction to his next book, The Blue Hallelujah. There also is an author's note to explain that the novella is adapted from a short story originally published under a different title as part of an anthology. The note helps to explain, in part, the fact that the plot feels contrived as do the characters and their actions, but really does not provide for what may, for want of a better term, be termed an uncomfortable read. This is most unfortunate because the rest of Straka's books I have read are most enjoyable and especially with the rarely encountered concentration on falconry. Reviewed by John H.
